28, 2004 - Taiwan Women’s Boxing Championships, in
Hualien, Eastern Taiwan
Emily Klinefelter
won the gold medal at 110 pounds. She defeated boxers
from Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Japan. Cheryl
Houlihan also won gold at 106 pounds. Jennifer Han
won silver at 125 pounds. Carrie Barry and
Elizabeth Quevedo won bronzes at 132 and 138 pounds
respectively. The USA placed third with two gold medals a
silver and two bronzes while India (2-0-1), Australia
(1-1-0) and Russia (1-0-1) finished fourth, fifth and sixth
respectively. Host Taiwan took seventh with three
silvers and three bronzes with New Zealand (0-1-3), Sri
Lanka (0-1-2), Japan (0-1-1, Hong Kong (0-1-1), Vietnam
(0-0-2), Mongolia (0-0-1) and Macau (0-0-0) following in
that order.

Splashmins Fun Park & Resort, Georgetown, Guyana
In the main event, Martha "Shadow" Salazar, 229, of
the United States won by a ninth round TKO, over
Georgetown's Pamela London, 210. The two were
fighting for the vacant WIBF heavyweight title. Card
was promoted by Holland Entertainment Promotion.
According to news sources, London took a "battering" before
her home town crowd, which included in attendance Guyana's
President Bharat Jagdeo. The ref intervened and stopped the
fight when London was absorbing head and body shots.

Kohyang, Korea
Shin Hee Choi of Korea, KO'd Philippine's Marisha
Allard 44 seconds, in the first round of a scheduled
eight rounder. WBAN has no information on Allard at this
time, but on www.boxrec.com,
she is listed as a pro debuter. The fact that Allard was
scheduled to fight eight rounds, she may have fights
in the Phillipines that have not been reported. WBAN will
research this boxer.
November 28, 2004 - Riot At the Hyatt, Monterey,
California
Isaiah Guzman, a sports reporter for the Santa Cruz Sentinel
wrote the following: Carina Moreno, 23, 108 lbs.,
won a unanimous decision (80-72) to improve to 7-0 as a pro
while Yvonne Caples, 32, 107, dropped to 7-7-2.
Moreno was originally scheduled to face Julie Rubalcava
(4-0) but Rubalcava backed out the week of the fight due to
an injury she sustained to her hand in a fight the week
before. The 109-pound bout was planned to go six
rounds but was lengthened to eight when several of the men’s
fights dropped out the day before. “It was nothing,”
Moreno said of going the extra two rounds. “I didn’t really
get tired.” Aside from a lump over her left eye from a head
butt, Moreno came out of what was supposed to be the biggest
test of her young pro-career virtually unscathed. Moreno
even dazed Caples in the seventh round when she caught her
with a good combination. “I’ve got to calm down when I
see an opponent hurt because I get a little too excited,”
Moreno said. Moreno fought from the fourth round on
with a hurt right hand. She wasn’t sure how she hurt it but
said she couldn’t throw it with as much force from that
point on. “(Trainer Rick Noble) said forget about the
pain just keep throwing and I kept on throwing it,” Moreno
said. Both Moreno and Noble were ecstatic with the win over
the more experienced, former International Female Boxing
Association world champion. The final judges scores
were 80-72 on all cards.

Tana Gallegos (2-0) defeated Crystal Bolles
(2-11) by Majority Decision. In a very close fight
conditioning proved to be the deciding factor as Bolles who
had the better skills was unable to match the work rate of
the determined Gallegos. After the bout Bolles announced her
retirement from boxing.

title. The 44-year-old Brown, who began boxing at age
37 and has held the IWBF and IFBA Junior Featherweight
titles, is now 13-14 (5 KO's) while George drops to 5-3 (0
KO's).

defeated McNamara (who did fight once in between, getting

not fought for three years; Pudwill's fought Mia St. John

Kara Ro (132 lbs) of Windsor, Ontario, Canada won by a
fourth-round TKO over Renee Richardt Douglas (132

On Thursday, Novermber 18,
2004, at the Marriott Hotel in Irvine, California,
on a Golden Boy Promotions card Julie Rubalcava of
Westminster, California won a six-round split
(60-54,60-54,55-59) decision over Elizabeth Cervantes,
originally from Mexico and now from Lakeside California. I'm
told this was a bantamweight fight that was mostly fought at
a distance and over-cautiously by both girls, provoking some
boos and catcalls from the crowd. The third round was
apparently the only one to contain significant action as
Rubalcava opened up and scored with frequent hard left hooks
to Cervantes's head. For most of the rest of the fight
Cervantes was content to stay as far as possible from
Rubalcava, who showboated but pursued her only in spurts,
much to the crowd's displeasure. Rubalcava remains
undefeated at 4-0 (1 KO), while Cervantes drops to 1-4.

In
front of 3,358 boxing fans, at the HP Pavilion, Molly
McConnell, 140, Portland, Oregon, now 3-0-0
(1KO),
stopped Tracy Carlton, 134, now 0-7-1, of
Compton, California, in the third round by TKO. This
was a rematch for the two, in which McConnell won by a
four-round unanimous decision the first time. Bill
Mertz, who trains McConnell said, "We had a great time and
Molly boxed better than ever using a stiff jab and often
using the triple jab to close on her running opponent. We
Told Jackie Kallen (Molly's manager) that the next fight we
would like to go six. Jackie brought her friend Ray Leonard
in the dressing room and visited for over a half hour. I
told him thank you for taking the time and he said: 'Being
friendly to people is free'. I was never a Sugar Ray fan,
but with an attitude like that; 'I Love the guy'. "

2004, at the Palmetto Boxing Academy Gym in Columbia, South
Carolina
Donna Biggers (126 lbs) TKO'd Nicole Perkins
(128 lbs), at 0:50 in the first. Biggers
is now 9-0-1 (8 KOs) and has fought Perkins three times in a
row, winning every one in the first round. Perkins is 0-3-0,

For the second time this year, international fighters won
against tough Korean opposition as
Mexico's
Mariana Juarez won the IFBA Jr. Bantamweight title
over In Young Lee by split decision. Judge Suk Kwon
Kim scored the fight 96-95, for Lee, while Judge Dong Ok Lee
scored it 96-95 and Judge Nam Chul Park 97-95 for
Juarez. Juarez proved to be a skilled fighter as she used an effective jab
and strong left hand to back the shorter Lee up most of the
fight. Lee the former IFBA Flyweight Champion was effective
inside, but lacked the strength to punish
Juarez.
Promoter Byon Joeng-IL put on a tremendous event from the
Yong In University Gymnasium where a packed house cheered
Lee and
Juarez non-stop through out the bout. Once again the Korean Boxing Commission,
under the direction of Sang Kwan Park its President, did an
outstanding job of officiating.

Frida Wallberg's original opponent, Ilona Papp, had to call
off the fight, and was substituted with Stoyanka Krasteva of Bulgaria
(1-1). Wallberg won the six round fight easily, with the scores 60-52,
60-52, 60-50. Krasteva took an eight count in the second and the sixth
rounds. In the second women's bout, Alexandra Matheus,
126, won the WEBF European featherweight championship, when she beat
her Spanish opponent Agatha Gracia, 126, on points. The

María José "Panterita" ('the Little Panther') Núñez, 113 ¼, got her
professional career off to a successful start last night in Chajarí (Entre
Rios, Argentina) when she stopped the more experienced Lourdes González
de Ocampo, 113 ¼, in the second round. Although in fact Uruguayan, Núñez has
been living in Paraguay for the last seven years. González, who was stepping
in for the injured Nancy Silvia Piccini and is the wife of the ex South
American champion and now trainer Luis Alberto Ocampo, was the centre of
controversy in Germany earlier in her career when her hospitalisation after
a fight with Regina Halmich triggered a bizarre anti-boxing diatribe in Der
Spiegel. She last saw action in Bolivar (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in 2003,
when she succumbed with equal rapidity to the current WIBA world champion at
bantamweight, Marcela Acuña. Her record now stands at 8 wins (3 by KO) and 4

attacked from the first bell on, took control with fast, intense
combos to head and body, and never allowed Hill to come out of her
defensive posture. Jeffries defeated Hill by a 10-round unanimous
decision. The fight ended with a standing ovation, and both Jeffries
and Hill were extremely impressive.
The judges
scored the bout 100-90, 99-91, 99-91 all for Jeffries.

Esther Schouten

Galina Koleva Ivanova
of Bulgaria fought to a draw over 10 rounds for Schouten's WIBF
Super Bantamweight Title. Schouten is now 16-1-1 (7 KO's)
while Ivanova is 5-4-2 (0 KO's). Final Scores: Esther-98-94 [Belgium
judge]; Esther-95-97 [Dutch judge]; Esther-95-95 [Belgium judge].
Jamie Johnson, also a boxer from the UK, was on scene at the fights
and spoke with Galina after the fight. Jamie said, "Galina spoke no
English, but she was friendly. Her trainer /manager said Galina was
the 'winner' and 'Champion'. Galinas corner did not know
if there would be a rematch." Jamie also got an opportunity to
speak with Schouten, and she said, "Esther was a pleasure to speak
with. Esther spoke to everyone and signed autographs. She
acted like a true Champion in my opinion. Esther said she was very
happy to retain the belt; she acknowledged that her opponent was
extremely tough and an excellent fighter. Schouten had an elbow
injury. I asked her if she had any problems with it before the
fight? Esther straight away dismissed that idea immediately, and
made it clear that it was no excuse. Esther said that she had wished
that she had fought every round like the 10th round. Esther also
commented that by retaining the belt, that money would now be put in
by the Olympic Organization to promote Women's boxing.
Jamie added, "Esther also commented on how she loved WBAN! AND she
thought that the site was the best out there! and she loved the fact
that it is very honest and unbiased."

Ann "Brown Sugar" Wolfe, now 18-1-0 (12 KO), Waco, Texas, won
a six-round unanimous decision over Cassandra Geigger, now
6-4-0 (6KO), of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Geigger was
knocked down twice to the canvas. WBAN's "As the Trainer" Tom
Moraetes was at the event and told WBAN, "I was at the fight this
past weekend with Ann Wolfe on the card in Tunica,
Mississippi, and she really looked awesome. am very
excited to possibly one day see her and Ali get together.
Should be a great match." Also, on the card as the
semi main event, Christy Nickel, now 6-1-0 (5KO), who attends
nursing school in Memphis, won an four-round unanimous decision over
Amy Milam of Little Rock, Arkansas. Moraetes said that
Nichol is definitely an up and comer in the sport, and one to watch
out for.

Valerie Mahfood,
161.5, stopped Yolanda Swindell, 163 3/4; 37 seconds into the
second round by TKO. The reason for the stoppage was that
Yolanda received a dislocated shoulder, in the second round causing
the fight to be stopped. The two got tangled in the ropes, and
Yolanda fell awkwardly to the canvas, falling on her arm.
Swindell told WBAN, "Up untill that point, it was a very
exciting and entertaining fight although only one round had been
scored, I was leading 10-9....On all judges cards. I really
want to thank Valerie for this opportunity and she has promised that
we will do it again...Of this I am sure. Thank you for the
opportunity to tell what really happened." Also,

131.5 won a four-round una. decision over Lana Alexander,

Csábi is now 22-0 (10 KO's) while Brown falls to 10-6 (4 KOs).
The fight was described as exciting, with Csabi dominated her
opponent every round, and retains her WIBF-GBU Bantamweight Title.

On a Universum Box Promotion card, Alesia-Tamara Graf (116¼
lbs) of Stuttgart, Germany TKO'd Agnes Adonga (117 lbs) of
Uganda at 0:02 in the fourth round of a scheduled 10-rounder for the
WIBF Intercontinental Bantamweight title.
Graf is now 7-0 (3 KOs); Adonga fell to 1-2 (0 KOs).
According to the
ZDF, Graf won the bout after Agnes Adongo's corner threw in
the towel after the 3rd round. Adongo already pleaded with her
trainer to stop the fight after the second round, but he persuaded
her to fight on. However she was outclassed and he agreed to stop
her sufferings after the next round. Graf, who is from Belarus,
explained in the interview, that she didn't come to Germany box but
to study. However, her knowledge of the German language was too bad,
and she suddenly found herself in a boxing career. She has since
changed her objectives, and decided to pursue her career in the
ring.

Guzmán falls to 1-3 (0 KO) with her second straight loss to
Fountain.

The WIBF-GBU minimumweight champion Krisztina Belinszky
(46,2kg/101,75lbs) won by technical KO only 45 seconds after the
first bell over Slovakian local hero Maria Vanceova
(49,3kg/108,75lbs) in a scheduled four round catchweight contest.
Vanceova went down two times before the referee stopped the contest.
Belinszky is now 10-4-2 (6KO) Vanceova fell to 0-2-0. This
match was set up for Belinszky's upcoming title defense in Györ,
Hungary on December 18, 2004.
