Providence, Rhode Island
Report by Ken Castro Former World title challenger, Missy Fiorentino,
124, knows that second chances aren’t easily earned. Last
night in her hometown, the hard-punching Fiorentino made the most of
her second opportunity achieving the moniker of World Champion in an
animated 10-round decision over Esther Schouten, 124, for the vacant IWBF
Featherweight crown at the Providence Convention Center.
Despite being bloodied by a head butt in the 9th round, Fiorentino
(13-1, 7 KO’s) managed to secure a win as the judges scorecards
returned tallies of 97-94, 99-91, 96-93. Schouten, 28, a
native of Hoorn, Netherlands and the current WIBF World Super
Bantamweight Champion was fighting in the United States for the
first time as a professional. Schouten fell to 18-3-1 (9 KO’s) with
the loss. Fiorentino was coming off a six-round victory by
decision over Belinda Lacacuente last July at Hampton Beach, New
Hampshire. Her last defeat was at the hands of Emiko Raika in a WIBF
Featherweight title match in September of 2004, at Kyoto Japan.
“This means everything, “ said an elated Fiorentino who plies her
trade as a State Marshall. “This is what I’ve been working for since
I started boxing.. I’ve been a pro for four years and it feels great
to finally have it happen. Having the crowd behind me made me want
to fight even harder.” Fiorentino proved to be the aggressor
throughout the fight, but it was Schouten who got the first opening
in the fight-knocking down the Rhode Island native midway through
the third round. Schouten was hoping the opportunity would further
her chances the rest of the way. “I know I have power so I know I
can knock people down,” said Schouten. “Of course I knew that that
round was mine and I wanted to keep it that way. But she kept coming
in and I wasn’t able to move a lot.” Fiorentino utilized her
jab effectively through the first three rounds to get on the
scoreboard. In the fifth, the pair closed out the final 15 ticks of
the round with a flurry of blows. “I thought it was more of a slip,”
Fiorentino of the third- round trip to the canvas. “But I knew that
they were going to score it as a knockdown so from then on I knew I
had to take every round, because now I’m behind two points.”
Fiorentino went to the body in the middle rounds and seemed to chip
away at Schouten’s reserves in the process. ““I knew I was wearing
her down with the body shots because her punches were getting weaker
and she was trying to move around more,” said the newly-minted
champion. “She’s a great fighter-a tough fight.” Schouten knew
from the outset that her opponent would be a tough draw. “I
didn’t have a game plan. I knew that she was aggressive and would
work hard. She worked harder than I did. That’s the reason I lost,”
said Schouten. “When I could move more, it seemed to be my fight.”
Fiorentino took control of rounds six through eight before
encountering the head butt that gave her an added sense of urgency.
“It’s not the first time I’ve fought with a cut. I saw the blood
pouring out and I thought they were going to stop it and I just
wanted to finish the fight,” she said.

- Anacortes, at the Northern Lights Casino, Washington
Tricia Turton cruised to an eight round unanimous decision
win over Lisa Holweyne. Scores were 79-73; 79-73; and 80-72.
Turton, in only her sixth professional fight is still rough around
the edges. She left herself open up the middle, but Holewyne simply
could not let her hands go to take advantage of that flaw. Turton
was the aggressor through the fight, easily controlling the action.
Turton's big punch was a right hook, those that landed knocked
Holewyne back a bit, but Turton was probably most effective simply
sticking a jab in Holewyne's face, keeping her from getting too
close. Holewyne still has some power in her punches, and she threw
some wicked uppercuts that just missed Turton's chin. Lisa talked about the
possibility of one more fight in her home town, Austin, so her
family could see her fight, then retiring from the sport.

- at the DoubleTree Westshore Hotel in Tampa, Florida By Christopher
Cook -
Making her professional debut, Tampa's own Jenna Shiver,
128.5 lbs, won a hard-fought unanimous decision over tough
Michele Taylor, 128.5 lbs. Shiver started strong,
landing a powerful right hand that sent Taylor down seconds into the
bout and it appeared the bout was close to being over. Taylor
gallantly fought back like a true warrior in the second, taking a
fair share of shots to get close to Shiver. To the surprise of the
crowd, Shiver cowered into the corner in the third after Taylor
unleashed a series of hard shots. A stoppage by Referee Frank
Gentile seemed imminent until Shiver sprang back to life instantly,
firing back with her best shots. Both fighters came out swinging in
the fourth, intent to end the fight. Shivers took an early lead but
froze after several hard punches to the head by Taylor. The result
seemed up for grabs until the scores were announced, with Shivers on
top by scores of 40-35 (Emil Conforti) and 38-37 twice (Mike Ross
and Alex Levin).

Shaw Conference Center, in
Edmonton, Canada
In the All-women's boxing card, "World Title Wave",
proved to be a very entertaining card. The event was telecast on Webcast, via Pay-Per-View, through
aringoftheirown.com.
The first fight of the
night featured Shelly Burton, 157.5, of Montana, vs. Laura "Lady Ram"
Ramsey, 163.5, of Winter Haven, Florida. Burton was supposed to
fight Laetitia Robinson, but the Burton Team was notified just shortly
before boarding their aircraft, going to Edmonton, that Robinson dropped
off the card when she was not medically cleared, due to an injury to her
nose. They were told at that time that Burton would be
fighting Laura Ramsey. Ramsey taking the fight on a 72 hour
notice.
The Burton-Ramsey bout was set for 10 rounds and they were fighting for
the vacant WIBA Intercontinental Super Middleweight. The bout was
action-filled for the two, and both displayed toughness throughout the
fight. Burton won by a majority decision, with the judges scoring the
bout 97-93, 95-95, and 97-93. This was Ramsey's first loss as a pro.
The second fight of the night, Chevelle “ Fists of Steel" Hallback, 129,
fought Belinda Laracuente, 129.5, for the WIBA Super Featherweight
title. There were no knockdowns during the bout. Final judges scores
were 98-92, 98-92, and 98-92. WBAN would like to see Jelena Mrdjenovich
fight Chevelle Hallback for a world title, as this would definitely be
an exciting match for boxing fans to see. In the third fight of
the night it was “Bad News” for Lisa Brown, 120 3/4, when Jeannine
"Heartless" Garside, 121 3/4, of Windsor, Canada, with only a 3-0
record, defeated her for the WIBA super-Bantamweight world title belt.
It was truly a battle of the southpaws. Garside surprised Brown with a
third round knockdown, where Brown took an eight-count. Garside, one of
the most exciting boxers to join the pro ranks is evidently following
the footsteps of her trainer, Margaret Sideroff. Sideroff won her first
world title in her fourth pro bout.in the main event, Jelena Mrdjenovich, 128 3/4, of Edmonton,
Canada, fought Franchesca "The Chosen One" Alcanter, 129,
for the WBC/WIBF super featherweight title. Jelena effectively used her
jab and combinations, and 24 seconds of the sixth round, threw a left
hook to Alcanter's head. Alcanter fell to the canvas with the hard left,
and the fight was stopped by KO.
Rock and Sock Productions gets high marks for this very entertaining
card, and the webcast was very professionally done.
Rock & Sock Productions in association with KO Promotions and
Independent Jewelers put on this event.
There was two male non-title bouts on the undercard.

November 7,
2005 - Klong Luang Prison, Pathumthanee, Thailand - Story and photos
by Scott Mallon
Late replacement Nananko Kikuchi (6-1-1)
of Japan used an effective body attack to wear down Thailand’s
Nongmai Sor Siriporn (0-1) en route to winning the W.B.C. women’s
strawweight championship via seventh round TKO.
What some thought of as a joke of a title fight was a surprisingly
good scrap with more skill displayed than was expected. Sor Siriporn
gave a valiant effort however was repeatedly turned back by the
stronger, faster and more skilled Kikuchi. The Japanese fighter
controlled the bout from the outset, punishing the game Thai time
and time again with wicked left hooks to the liver and straight
right counters to the head. By the end of the third stanza the body
shots had taken their toll. Sor Siriporn was gasping for air and
ready to collapse when the bell rang to signify the end of round
three. The doctor looked glanced into her corner between rounds
however determined she was capable of fighting on.Kikuchi picked up
her punch output in round four and only the bell was able to save
the withering Sor Siriporn. It became more and more apparent to
those in attendance Sor Siriporn was now fighting on heart alone and
was totally spent. The gutsy Thai managed to
somehow make it through round five and six, occasionally gathering
enough strength to throw a few combinations but doing little damage
and only prolonging the inevitable.
November 5, 2005 -
Boxing Pavilion, Dallas, Texas
Light Middleweight Angel Martinez, of Dallas, won a
four-round unanimous decision over Tana Gallegos.
November 5, 2005 - at
the Lawrence Joel Coliseum at the Annex, in Winston Salem, North
Carolina, put on by Ring of Dreams Promotions with Promoter Mr.
Kerry Smith there were two WBE Title defenses. In the
Main Event of the night Carlette Ewell faced Ljeoma
Egubinine for the WBE Lt. Heavy and Supper Middle Weight Titles.
The catch weight was 170 lbs. Ewell and Equbinine looked to be in
the best condition for this bout, according to WBAN’s insider. In
round one, Ewell moved well as a boxer, and was impressive in how
she has improved as a “boxer.” Ewell known more as a brawler, the
latter style may have suited her more when fighting Equbinine,
sticking to more of her old style and making a war out of it. By
trying to box “the boxer” Equbinine----used her height and reach to
her advantage. In round one, Ewell went down (once or twice), and in
round two, it was reported that she went down twice. The ref, Bill
Clancy stopped the bout. The crowd was reported to have been
“stunned” as they thought the hometown favorite (Ewell) would win
this bout. Equbinine was a definite step up for Ewell, considering
some of Ewell's past opponents. In the second women’s bout,
Donna Biggers fought Darnella Barnes, of Wilson,
North Carolina with the bout going the
distance. WBAN was told that this was an "all-action" bout. Biggers won by a unanimous decision. Barnes showed a lot of heart
and determination during the bout, but Biggers experience won this
night. The weight class was at 135 lbs, and was a four
rounder. WBAN was told that the women’s bouts were without
a doubt the best two fights of the night. Biggers has come a
long way. Her last fight was the talk of the event, saying it was
the "fight of the night." Biggers had a repeat performance on
this card.
