April 29, 2006 - in Stuttgart, Germany
Alesia Graf successfully defended her first title defence of her GBU Junior Bantamweight belt.  Graf fought against Hungarian Beatrix Farago.  Farago showed a lot of fighting spirit and courage, but simply did not have the boxing skills to pose any kind of threat to Alesia Graf. Farago had a clear disadvantage in reach, and she hardly managed to get inside to deliver any telling punches. Graf was in command all through the fight, until the referee stopped it, 1 min 42 sec. into the sixth round.  The fight was televised on ZDF.

April 29, 2006 - Silver Reef Casino, Ferndale, Washington
Melissa Hernandez
(2-0-0 1KO) faced Merced Nunez (pro debut).
The four round super featherweight bout was easily one of the favorites of the night. The difference was experience. Hernandez, though she only has two professional fights, had sixteen amateur bouts. Nunez had only two amateur bouts. Nonetheless, the fight was action packed. Though Nunez stood taller, she had some trouble making contact with the elusive Hernandez. Hernandez was clever enough to move in close, throw a jab or a shot to the body, then retreat just out of range. Nunez possesses some good skills, and once she learns to throw her jab straight instead of looping it, she will be dangerous. She is certainly a tough young fighter. She showed no signs of tiring at the end of the four round fight, but it looked like Hernandez had the stamina to go another four quite easily. All three judges scored the fight 40-36. Once Nunez gets a few more fights under her belt, it would be nice to see these two face each other again. Both are bell to bell fighters, and they don't lack confidence either. [Photo Credits:  Mike Blair}

April 29, 2006 -Coushatta Resorts in Kinder, Louisiana
Mariem Punchenella Brakache, 154, won a six-round unanimous decision over Morgan McCarley, 160.  Brakache said at the weigh-in, "If a six pounds difference should determine my win, then we are on the wrong foot." Mariem predicted that the fight would not go the distance. The Judges score were 59-54 on all cards.  McCarley took this fight on a short notice, when her original opponent found out that she is pregnant. In a second bout, Ann Wolfe TKO'd her opponent Cassandra Geiggar in the second round of a scheduled four-rounder.  [Photos by J & P Photography] Top photo, Brakache (r), bottom photo Ann Wolfe.

April 27, 2006 - San Manuel Casino, Highland, California
Bill Ortega wrote the following who was ringside:  Junior bantamweights Heather Percival and Tonia Cravens battled for six rounds and it could have gone more on Thursday night.  At San Manuel Casino, Percival used her height, reach and boxing knowledge to score a unanimous decision over New Mexico’s Cravens who looked hell-bent on destroying anyone in front of her.  “I knew she was an aggressive fighter,” said Percival (8-2) of Fontana, a small town located about 12 miles west from the casino. “She threw a lot of punches and some of them landed, but I felt I landed the cleaner more effective punches.”   Cravens had fought a month ago against another Southern California named Kaliesha West. In that fight, both slugged it out in the middle of the ring.   “I felt I may have lost the fight against Kaliesha West,” said Cravens (2-3-1). “But I landed better punches against Heather. She just ran.”  From the first bell Cravens came out swinging without a care about defense or Percival’s power. Most of the first round Percival leaned against the ropes and attempted to block most of the incoming blows. More than a few penetrated her guard.  “I landed a lot of right hands,” Cravens said.   The next round Percival began to jab and move. Whenever Cravens got too close, Percival would grab her and spin her around while landing some stinging counter shots. That was the Fontana fighter’s formula for success the rest of the fight.  “She landed once or twice, but not much more,” said Percival who suffered a cut on the left eye during the last 30 seconds of the fight from an accidental clash of heads. “I boxed her. That was my plan going in.”  Percival had been looking for a fight ever since losing against Teri Cruz for the junior bantamweight world title last year.   “We saw Heather fight Teri Cruz, that’s why we took this fight,” said Rocky Stapleton, who trains Cravens. Percival, who is ranked in the top 10 of the junior bantamweight division, had also seen Cravens before.  “When she fought Kaliesha she never stopped punching,” Percival said. “That’s what I expected and that’s what she did against me. But she seemed a little more aggressive. She’s a good fighter.”  Cravens said she wants a rematch against Percival.  “I definitely want to fight her again,” Cravens said. “The people thought I won.”  Many fans in the audience booed the decision when the judges scored it 58-56, 59-55, 60-54 for Percival.   “There’s always going to be fans who come here and drink a lot of beer and want to see a brawl. That’s not me, I’m a boxer.”  Percival’s manager and trainer Larry Ramirez said that she cannot fight for 60 days because of the cut she suffered in the last 30 seconds of the fight.

April 15, 2006  Maritim Hotel, in Magdeburg, Germany
There were three women's bouts on the card.  Germany's Natascha Ragosina, 168,  retained her WIBF belt and gained the GBU belt by a TKO win over United States, Carlette Ewell, 173 1/4.  The referee stopped the fight 1:23 into the fifth round. Ewell was a very game opponent and managed to put pressure on Ragosina when she got in close, but she had to work very hard to get in there. As the fight progressed, Ragosina took full advantage of her longer reach and her very good boxing skills. Ewell kept coming forward, but her attempts to close was paid for by a lot of good jabs from Ragosina. Halfway into to fifth round, Ewell was stunned by a hard right hand, and Ragosina set in the chase, resulting in another right that sent Carletta Ewel to the floor. She beat the count, but the renewed bombardment from from Ragosina made the referee stop the fight.The first women's bout of the evening was between Spotlights newly signed Super Welterweight Karolina Lukasik of Polen whose second pro fight was against Svetlana Adreera of Russia. It turned out to be hard fought, entertaining fight, between two fighters who has both benefited from a very good schooling in the amateur ranks. The bout was won by  Lukasik by unanimous decision. In another women's bout, Susianna Kentikian was back in the ring after a three-month lay off, after she had to undergo surgery to her right elbow.  Her performance left nobody in doubt, that she is back at full strength. Her opponent, Evgenia Zablotskaja of Russia made her pro debut, after a good amateur career. Although she had a distinctive height and reach advantage, it couldn't prevent her from being "run over" by a very aggressive Kentikian, who used her speed to outbox the taller opponent. After 1:32 into the second round Zablotskaja's corner threw the towel to prevent further punishment. We look forward to see this very exiting boxer in the ring against more experienced pro boxers in the future.
Armenian Susianna Kentikian has a very busy schedule these days. Sunday she will appear at the Pan Armenian Games in Duisburg as a guest of honor along with her fellow Armenian Arthur Abraham, who is the current IBF world champion.
