December 13, 2007 - Roseland

Noriko Kariya, 118, met Salina Jordan, 118,
at the for a schedule four-round Bantamweight bout. Almost
defenseless, gloves down and awkwardly punching from the waist,
Salina Jordan somehow summoned the spirit to keep standing for the
first two rounds under a heavy, unchecked left and right bombardment
from Noriko Kariya. But early in the third, (0:28 seconds,
seeing Salina, clumsy and dizzied, and with no sign of fatigue from
the Noriko onslaught, the referee stopped the fight. Stepping up her
training and varying her style, Noriko attempts to reach her full
potential. Jill Diamond of WBC’s Championship Committee
comments, “She’s New York’s best kept secret.” No mystery this
night, she won this match by TKO. Story by David Pambianchi Logged in Master

Domingo Olivo, of Monticello, New York, now 5-2-1
(0KO), fought Jelena Mrdjenovich of Edmonton, 21-2-1 (11KO),
to a 10-round draw. Mrdjenovich was defending her super
featherweight WBC world title belt against Olivo. Final judges
scores were 96-94 for Mrdjenovich, 96-94 for Olivo, and 95-95.
Olivo, who apparently plans to be a “warrior” in the sport (more
power to her, we need more of her in the sport) fought in
Mrdjenovich’s home turf, and pulled off a draw with the much more
experienced fighter and world champion. In the Edmonton
Journal Olivo was quoted as saying before the fight that she would
be bringing Mrdjenovich a surprise---Olivo most certainly did.
Mrdjenovich was quoted in a post fight interview in the Edmonton
Journal, “I really don't understand these judges. I outboxed her,
out-countered her, I had better defence, better offence. When I
heard those scores I was shocked. It's almost like the judges expect
me to come out strong and when I change my style a bit I get
penalized for it."
Mrdjjenovich is not the first world champion that Olivo has taken on
early in her boxing career. She fought world champion Layla
McCarter in June of 2007, and lost to a majority decision.
McCarter came into that fight with over 40 pro bouts on her record.

December 1, 2007 - Emerald Queen
Casino, TAcoma, Washington
Jennifer Barber (4-0 2KOs) showed her discipline and ability to
box in dispensing of DJ Morrison (0-4) in the semi main event
at the Emerald Queen Casino Saturday night. Morrison charged across
the ring at the opening bell, swinging wild and wide. It appeared
that Morrison figured her only chance to win was to catch Barber
early. That is where Barber displayed a boxer’s discipline. Instead
of matching Morrison’s flailing punches with her own, Barber stepped
to the side and landed two crisp right hands to Morrison’s ribs.
When Morrison turned to face her, Barber threw a left that popped
Morrison’s head back. Morrison stepped forward, swinging lefts and
rights, hoping something would touch Barber. Barber again threw her
jab, then a right to the body. Every punch was tight, short and
hard. Morrison’s head popped skyward again as she turned away from
Barber. At that point the referee yelled to stop Barber from
throwing a punch that would have landed on the back of Morrison’s
head. Barber squared her shoulders as Morrison turned to face her
again, and before Morrison could cock her arms, her head was reeling
and again she turned her back. The referee this time stepped in and
waved an end to the fight. The end came at 1:04 of the first, so the
fight lasted just about as long as it has taken you to read this.
However, in that minute, Jennifer Barber was quite impressive. She
quickly adjusted to the barrage of Morrison punches. She remained
calm and threw punches she knew would connect. She pressed forward,
and Morrison could really do nothing but keep flailing or run.

Ogleydis Suárez of Venezuela improved to 4-0-1 (4 TKOs) last
night when she stopped Lorena Carrillo of Colombia on the La
Saga Continua bill in the Roberto Duran Gymnasium, Panama City.
Jorge Olmos reports that "the end came 1 min 28 seconds into the
third round, when the referee was forced to bring the proceedings to
a close in view of the fearsome thrashing being handed out by the
beautiful Venezuelan." Commented Suárez. "I'm happy... it was a
great fight to end the year with." This is only the second
setback in Lorena Carrillo's career. After a baptism of fire against
the far more experienced Carolina Alvarez, Carrillo had taken less
than two minutes in her second fight to reduce Doris Ramírez, the
daughter the trainer Ernesto "Campeón" Ramírez, to a state of
defencelessness. Indeed it was Ramírez's father, from the corner,
who brought the unequal combat to an end. A draw with former
Colombian Golden Gloves winner Olga Julia was followed in
Barranquilla a few weeks ago by another win by stoppage, the victim
this time being Lisset (aka Lissette) Salazar, whom she knocked out
in the first round. Sources: www.diaadia.com.pa, Boxeo Colombiano.

December 1, 2007 - Lusaka, Zambia
At the Lusaka’s Woodlands Stadium, in Lusaka Zambia, Belinda
Laracuente lost a controversial split decision against Africa’s
Esther Phiri. The two fought for the GBU super featherweight
title. In the Lusaka Times they reported that Phiri had “retained”
her GBU title, but “few many agree that the verdict was fair as
America’s Belinda Laracuente was a trifle better and could claim the
glory as well.” They reported that Phiri was slower and could
hardly match the technique and sheer power of Laracuente. They went
on to describe Laracuente as “sharper, cleverer, and more
aggressive” and that “an ordinary eye” could have given her at least
five out of the eight rounds. Laracuente said after the fight, “It’s
a shame---I beat the girl on points because I scored more as I was
very aggressive. I feel it’s very unfair.” Logged in Master
