July 31, 2008 - Schuetzen Park, in
North Bergen, New Jersey
Ava “Lady of Boxing” Knight, 117, of Chico, California,
remains undefeated at 4-0-2 (2KO), when she stopped Canadian
Noriko Kariya, 119, by KO [20 seconds] in the fifth round of a
scheduled six-rounder.
Mike In reported
the following: "The show began with local favorite Noriko Kariya
battling it out with nineteen year-old Californian Ava Knight, in a
rare female bout. Trailing on the scorecards after four rounds of
the scheduled six rounder, Kariya was boxing well but absorbing
several clean power shots from the taller, well-skilled fighter.
Early in round five Knight crushed Kariya with a huge right hand,
sending the stunned Canadian-born bantamweight crumbling backwards
onto the seat of her
pants. Momentarily debilitated and obviously hurt, the gutsy Kariya
valiantly tried to get to her feet but could not, getting counted
out by referee Sparkle Lee at the 20 second mark of the fateful
fifth round. A tremendous showing by Knight, who stays unbeaten at
4-0-2 (3 KO’s) with the knockout victory, while the likable Kariya
now stands at 9-3-1 (2 KO’s)." [Logged into master search]

July 12, 2008 -
Jevanjee Gardens in the Central Business District of Nairobi, Kenya
Charity Mukami had a draw against Patroda
Lihavi. Report by Edward Sande: Barely 24 hours
after another Kenyan Conjestina Achieng was perceived to have lost
unfairly in a contest against Natasha Ragosina, womens' boxing's
ugly side reared its head again in a non-title fight in Nairobi
Kenya. [In Sande's opinion], everybody at the Jevanjee Gardens
agreed that Middleweight Charity "Scary" Mukami won a shutout
victory against fellow Kenyan Patroda Lihavi. The Kenya
Professional Boxing Commission (KPBC) however had other ideas and
scored the fight a draw. Promoter Atomic Bunde did not mince his
words. "It's a disgrace, the decision is a clear affront to all
boxing fans who attended the event and more so for Mukami".
Bunde added, "We will launch a formal complaint on the issue though
I know that the decision will stand." Mukami was clearly in charge,
stepping back at the right time, and landing clear crisp jabs on
Lihavi. The crowd was shocked when KPBC Secretary General announced
decision as a draw. One or two hooks that Lihavi landed on
Mukami were certainly not enough to earn her a draw. Mukami's record
is now 2 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw, while Lihavi registered her best
'result' adding a draw to her 0-3 record.

herself heard above the booing and whistling.
July 11, 2008 -
Faehrhafen, Cuxhaven, Niedersachsen, Germany
Natascha Ragosina won by a 10-round unanimous decision against
Conjestina Achieng. The two fought for the WIBA, WIBF, WBC,
WBA world titles. Ewan Whyte wrote: She came dressed as
Supergirl but it would be a lie to say Natascha Ragosina fought like
a girl. She didn’t fight at all. She ‘boxed’ (we are told), which
meant trying to keep the challenger at arm’s length (further still,
if possible) for twenty short minutes while the clock ran down. She
didn’t even make a very good job of that, it has to be said; Achieng
cornered her on quite a few occasions with surprising ease, and when
she did, she landed some quite good punches. Ragosina neither landed
nor even threw anything all night that would have smudged your
granny’s make-up, yet according to the promoter, Ulf Steinforth, the
decision (97-93, 96-94, 97-93) in her favour was correct. What we
saw tonight, he told us, was “a class boxer against a fighter”. This
‘fighter/boxer’ dichotomy will be the death of boxing. Sport is
about two people or two teams attempting to do the same thing, with
each trying to do it better than the other. If they in fact have
different objectives, then separate sports are needed to accommodate
them. Otherwise it becomes not only farcical but unfair.
