(FEB 29) Eileen Olszewski, 110
½,
fighting in her present hometown, won the WIBA flyweight title last
night with a ten round majority decision over Elena Reid, 111, of
Las Vegas at the Roseland Ballroom, minutes from Broadway, in New
York City on the under-card of a boxing program promoted by Cedric
Kushner's Gotham Boxing and Steve Bash's Bash Boxing. The scorecards read: 95-95, 98-92 (2x) and in the view of the
partisan crowd and, probably, a substantial portion of those fans at
Roseland with no rooting interest, the two judges, who had Olszewski
the clear winner, had a much better view of the bout than the lone
dissenting arbiter.
Olszewski controlled the early rounds with her straight up, come
forward style. Reid made a valiant attempt at salvaging her title in
the middle rounds with effective counter punching to the body. But
the new champion clinched the decision by landing the bigger punches
more effectively and more often in the last three rounds.
[The Amanda Serrano bout, where she was set to make her pro debut
was cancelled]
