Update: Located Sylvia Torres in Miami Beach, Florida.  Read updated story (March 15, 2007).

(JULY 27, 2001) WBAN is seeking any and all information about 82-year-old (at the time of the television program, she would be 85 - 86 now)  boxer Silvia Torres.  Torres was on a light-hearted television show in Germany that brought stories from around the world.  According to the story, Silvia (or Sylvia) got interested and started boxing at the age of  seven.  She was born in Cuba and lost her parents when she was six, so she had to fend for herself from a very early age. Silvia was taking part in shows in Cuba back in the 1930's (unsure if it was boxing or wrestling).  When the communists took over, these kind of activities were banned and she moved to Florida.

She claimed to have had 500 fights with 30 KO's. She explains, that she has had her nose broken and several black eyes from her activities in the ring, and said that if you can't take a little bruising, boxing is not the sport for you. Silvia said on the show that after a hard session of sparring she goes home and rests, getting ready to go to the gym the next day. She said that she loved boxing and hardly missed a day in the gym.

One of her sparring partners (male) and her trainer were interviewed, and they both claimed that she has good power in both hands, and especially the right can be vicious. Also that she was quick and has good footwork.  Silvia was asked if she was afraid to walk the streets, and she replied,  "No, people knows me from TV and newspapers, so they are not
going to mess with me"  Her final remark was. When I die, don't get me flowers for my coffin. I want a pair of boxing gloves on the lid."  WBAN has a VIDEO of Torres that was sent in by a boxing fan!

Update: WBAN was notified on September 14, 2005, that there was a mural of Sylvia   The photo is  of that mural that is painted at the entrance of the Teo Cruz Boxing Gym, in Florida.

©Photographer Jeff Greenberg permitted WBAN to post the photo of that mural.
