DEAR FRIENDS, RELATIVES, SUPPORTERS AND
FANS...As I sit here and read the Olympic Creed, "The most important thing
in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most
important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential
thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

October 27, 2005 |
(OCT 27) Middleweight Shelley Burton (6-2)
has faced champs before-- and won. Although she is reluctant to compare pro
boxing with the Tough Woman competitions early in her fight career, the
victories she gained in her Tough Woman days gave Shelley confidence which
is a definite advantage in any sport. "I did the Tough Woman the first time
almost as a joke," Shelley said, " to win the extra money. Then when I beat
somebody that was an undefeated champ, I really started to think about
boxing.

What is a world champion?
By Sue TL Fox |
(OCT 18) Webster Dictionary describes a
champion as a "winner of first prize or first place in competition." Taken a
step farther, Webster’s defines the best as "excelling all others."
Those definitions may be accurate in other sports, but all too often it
seems they fail to apply in women’s boxing, where anyone...

The Fighter and the Promoter
By Bernie McCoy
October 18, 2005
|
(OCT 18) It's boxing's basic story, the
on-going interaction between the fighter and the promoter. It's been done in
novels, movies and countless magazine and newspaper stories. I've done the
story a couple of times and every time I did, there was always a "good guy"
and a "bad guy". In truth, it was usually the promoter who wore the black
hat. This story is different in the sense that not only do both the promoter
and the fighter believe that they are each "on the side of the angels", in

(OCT 12) On October 8, 2005, at the Harrah’s

Sock Productions, with “A Ring of their Own” Boxing card. I
generally do not cover the events myself, but rely on other photographers
and writers to provide ringside coverage of the boxing events. I did
decide to cover the Laughlin event, and was not disappointed.

Asa Sandell: From Sweden to Gleason's to Nevada
By Bernie McCoy
October 11, 2005 |
(OCT 11) Gleason's Gym, hard by the East River on the northern edge of
Brooklyn, is straight out of central casting. Every movie scene depicting a
boxing gym probably uses Gleason's as a model. In fact, many of those movie
scenes were actually filmed there. When I went up the stone
stairs to the gym, recently, the surprise was how little it had changed in
all the years since the last time I'd been there. The same dust, the same
odors, the same sounds; leather on leather, shoes on canvas, the buzzers,
the bells. The faces around the gym were a bit different, but in a way, they
were exactly the same.
