(DEC 29) The awarding of a grant of €10,000 to Ballina Boxing Club by the Coca Cola Thank You Fund for the promotion of ladies boxing has been welcomed by Fine Gael TD for Mayo, Deputy Michelle Mulherin. Deputy Mulherin said the funding would help the club widen its appeal to women boxers and would also be opening a fitness and training centre on Mercy Road, Ballina, in September.  Full Story

(DEC 26) Last year at about this time, WBAN asked the boxing fans to SEND IN THEIR TOP PICKS for boxing matches they would like to see take place in 2012. We did an update on that "2012 Wish List" for Fights they wanted to see.  Unfortunately, it did not appear that many of those fights took place----although we have seen many great female bouts this year in the sport. Katie Taylor crowned Ireland's 'Sportswoman of the Year' 2012

(DEC  24) Katie Taylor has been crowned The Irish Times/Irish Sports Council ‘Sportswoman of the Year 2012’ for her exceptional sporting achievements throughout the year. Taylor was presented with her award by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny at an awards ceremony in Dublin. Following an outstanding year for Irish women in sport, Taylor was among 12 sports stars nominated for the 2012 title. One of Ireland’s most renowned and respected Irish Olympic athletes, Maeve Kyle was also awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her valued contribution to the world of Athletics...Full Story

(DEC 23) After hearing about some issues that have come to WBAN's attention concerning the social network "Twitter"----WBAN decided to put out a few helpful tips, suggestions and examples of "tweets" that have backfired.  Some of the problems at times with Twitter is that it can allow one to blurt out things to the whole world that can be regretted after it is posted.  epending on the severity of the comments by the "Tweets", it can also have negative consequences or reactions from others for such blunders. Holm Accepts Challenge from Braekhus in potential mega fight in women's boxing

(DEC  21) WBAN has received a press release in regards to Holly Holm accepting a public challenge by Cecelia Braekhus.  The release stated the following:  "Negotiations are about to begin for arguably the most anticipated match-up in women's professional boxing history between 14-time, three-division world champion Holly "The Preacher's Daughter" Holm (32-2-3, 9 KOs) and undefeated Cecilia "First Lady" Braekhus (21-0, 5 KOs), considered by most to be the top two female pound-for-pound boxers in the world, for July in Las Vegas." (DEC 19) WBAN was notified via a press release from the WBC that Ana Maria Torres (WBC Emeritus and Diamond champion) gave birth this on December 17th. The baby boy's name is Cristobal Mora Ramirez, with a new found nickname of "Guerreito" (little Warrior). Torres was given a gift of a WBC for her newborn by Don Jose Sulaiman...Full Story

(DEC 19) Katie Taylor winning Olympic gold in the ExCeL Arena has been voted Ireland’s most iconic sporting moment of 2012 by a massive 75% of Irish people, according to Pembroke Communications’ 2012 Sports Sentiment Index (SSI). (DEC 14) On Wednesday night at the Estadio Luna Park, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sabrina Maribe Perez, 116¾, of Isidro Casanova, Buenos Aires, Argentina won the WBA Interim Bantamweight title after she won a 10-round unanimous decision over  holder after winning a unanimous decision over Stefany Bizquiazo, 113¾, of  Canelones, Uruguay.

Caples is currently in Germany and she told WBAN the following: "In June I made the move to the east coast specifically Raleigh, North Carolina. Maria Bastasin Wins by a Split Decision over Badry

(DEC 8) Last night at the Shaw Conference Centre, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Maria Bastasin, 135,  now 1-1-0, won her first pro fight when she defeated Brandy Badry,134, of Edmonton, Canada, by a four-round split decision.  The final judges scores were 39-37, 39-37, and 37-39.

(DEC 7)  Ireland's 60 kg Olympic Gold medallist,Katie Taylor was this evening presented with the 2012 AIBA Female Boxer of the Year trophy at the Association's Annual Awards Ceremony in Yerevan,Armenia. (DEC 6) India’s boxers including Olympic flyweight bronze medallist Chungneijang Mery Kom Hmangte (better known as Mery Kom) are tonight reeling from a second ‘knock-out blow’ in 24 hours as the amateur sport’s Governing body, the A.I.B.A (International Boxing Association) meeting in Yerevan today imposed an immediate ‘provisional suspension’ of the I.B.F (Indian Boxing Federation). Thursday’s decision taken by the AIBA’s Executive Committee in the Armenian capital means that no Indian pugilist can participate in any AIBA events or indeed any AIBA Boxing event....Full Story

(DEC 6) ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Veteran boxing promoter Lenny Fresquez has announced that Lerner Film is shooting a documentary about 12-time, three division world champion Holly "The Preacher's Daughter" Holm (31-2-3, 9 KOs).
Director Arnie Lerner will have a film crew working tomorrow night's Fresquez Productions-presented "Fire And Ice" show, featuring Holm versus WIBA super featherweight champion Diana Prazak (11-1, 7 KOs) in the 10-round main event fighting for the IBA and WBF light welterweight titles, at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque...Full story

(DEC 2)  Last night  in Dusseldorf, Germany, Carina Moreno defeated hometowner Susie Kentikian in a 10-round split decision!  We do not have all the details but the scores were the following: 96-94, 97-93 in favor of Moreno, and 96-94  for Kentikian.

(DEC 1) On December 7, 2012, at the Fraserview Centre, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Sarah Pucek and Lucia Larcinese will headline the "Femme Fatale" boxing card. The two are fighting for a local vacant Canadian Featherweight title in this ten round bout. In the semi-mainliner, Jaime Ward will take on Alisah McPhee, who is making her pro debut. McPhee will give up some weight and is planning to campaign at 118 lb. McPhee is undefeated as an amateur and has an exciting style.
