October 27, 2006 - Auditorio Enrique Bátiz in Cuautitlán Izcalli
(Mexico)
Juan Carlos "Bronquito" Contreras was
inspired to take up boxing by watching his mum, Ana
Arrazola. On Friday night, the two of them fought on the
same bill (“against different opponents, obviously!”
Alfredo Jaime Gómez felt it necessary to point out) in
the Auditorio Enrique Bátiz in Cuautitlán Izcalli
(Mexico), with Juan Carlos “Bronco” Contreras, father
and husband, working the corner for both fights. First into the ring came “Bronquito”,
who defeated Juan Ramos over 3 rounds on points. Not
bad, but not quite there yet. When the turn came for the
professionals, Mamita really showed how,
inflicting a humiliating second round TKO on a far
heavier (and supposedly tough) opponent, María Eugenia
García; who’s a bantamweight to Arrazola’s junior fly!(Source: Esto)

October 7, 2006-Lucky Eagle Casino, Rochester, WA
Most of the prefight talk around the
Lucky Eagle Casino Saturday night was about the main event, an 8
round Junior Middleweight NWBA Championship fight pitting local
favorite Dakota Stone against the always tough Layla
McCarter. More than one fight fan believed that this main event
would be an all out war. They were not disappointed. Stone
controlled the early rounds because she was able to use her height
advantage to keep McCarter moving backwards. Stone also threw more
punches early, and though she was able to catch McCarter, she never
seemed to connect flush enough to stagger her. McCarter
settled down in the middle rounds when she began ducking just out of
reach of Stone's jab, and when trouble approached, McCarter tied
Stone up. The middle rounds were quite close. It appeared that
McCarter threw the more accurate, and probably the heavier punches,
but Stone remained the busier fighter. The fight turned in
McCarter's favor in the later rounds. She was able to catch Stone
cleanly, sneaking her jab inside and underneath Stone's long reach.
When the bell sounded to end the fight McCarter's cornerman hoisted
her as she raised her arms. Stone too took a bit of a victory lap,
arm raised to the cheering crowd. The championship belt was in the
ring, and the crowd waited to hear the decision. After four rounds
all three judges had Stone ahead 39-37. McCarter won rounds 7 and 8
on all three judges cards. There was little doubt that she was the
stronger and more accurate fighter as the end neared. One judge
scored the fight 77-75 for Dakota Stone, the other two had the fight
even at 76. But after eight rounds of warfare, there would be no
clear-cut winner, the fight ended in a majority draw.

October 7, 2006-Mexico
Two sullen, raven-haired beauties. The one physically more imposing;
the other faster, spiteful, leaner, and seemingly more alert. I was
already thinking of From Russia with Love before Ana María
Torres and Mayela Pérez told Esto yesterday they
expected their fight would be “to the death”. Google turned up
the whole passage [Link ]:-“While
Kerim spoke, Bond examined the two beautiful, taut, sullen animals
in the centre of the ring… One was bigger-boned than the other, and
obviously stronger,
[that would be Torres]
but she looked sullen and slow-eyed and might not be quick on her
feet. She was handsome in a rather leonine way, and there was a slow
red glare in her heavy lidded eyes as she stood and listened
impatiently to the head of the tribe. She ought to win, thought
Bond. She is half an inch taller, and she is stronger.
“Where this girl was a lioness, the other was a
panther–lithe and quick and with cunning sharp eyes that were not on
the speaker but sliding sideways, measuring inches, and the hands at
her sides were curled into claws.
[this would be Pérez, ‘the Little
Cobra’]. The muscles of her fine legs
looked hard as a man's… She looks a dangerous little bitch of a
girl, thought Bond. She will certainly get in the first blow. She
will be too quick for the other“.
Bond, you may remember, was wrong on both counts; and it was only
the fortuitous supervention of an explosion that prevented the
smaller girl performing the ‘kiss of Dracula’ on her helpless
opponent “as she bore down on her with all
her weight and bent her to the ground”.
This time, there was no ‘BOOM!’ — only the merciful intervention of
a referee — and it wasn’t the Little Cobra’s fangs “reaching
towards the offered neck” but something more akin to the finale
of Bonnie and Clyde, with one girl trapped on the ropes,
helpless, beaten, her body shaking convulsively as she was riddled
with… er… (can you be ‘riddled with punches’?). Well,
that’s what it says. Oh, and it was Torres that won. [TKO 1
min 50 secs into the sixth](More details as reports become
available). Logged

UBC
bantamweight champion Carolina "Chapita" Gutiérrez [11-0-0 (8 KOs)]
of Córdoba returned to the ring on Friday for the first time since
her suspension, when she faced Lourdes González de Ocampo [10-6-1 (4
KOs)] of Misiones in the club Atlético de Villa Santa Rosa
(Argentina). It was a non-title fight. Correction: a
‘non-title non-fight’, which (remembering our algebra) we can reduce
to ‘a non-fight’. At least, that’s how La Voz del Interior
saw it. “With no opposition, it was easy for ‘Chapita’” was their
headline: “Ranked nowhere, Lourdes was just another irrelevant
adversary for ‘Chapita’, who really does need now a more severe
test.” González was down once (and took an eight count) in the first
round after a series of body shots and twice in the second — right
hands to the head and jaw — before referee Carlos Pedernera decided
he’d seen enough. Purists among you will object that ‘head and
jaw’ is a false dichotomy: (“Surely González’s jaw is part of her
head?”). So it is, for the time being; but it won’t be for long, if
she doesn’t take up some other sport.
