Jolene Blackshear Wins by Decision over Linda Soto

(JAN 31) Last night at the Las Pulgas, in Tijuana, Mexico, in the semi-main, Jolene Blackshear, San Diego, CA, won a six round unanimous decision over Linda Soto, from Chihuahua, Mexico The two were fighting in the junior flyweight division.  No other details at this time.

USA Boxing to Open 2013 International Action with Events in China and the Dominican Republic

(JAN 29) USA Boxing is opening 2013 international action with two events on opposite sides of the globe. Team USA will travel to China and the Dominican Republic for competitions in February as a pair of athletes head to Beijing for a dual event, February 4-7, while eight boxers will compete in the Independence Cup in Santiago later in the month.  Full Story

(JAN 28) This week in #4, we have had some controversial issues take place. First, we had word from other online news stories that Ava Knight wanted to take on a male boxer in an exhibition fight. Secondly, after Cecilia Braekhus challenged Holly Holm this coming July, and Holm accepting that challenge; we had Layla McCarter challenge Braekhus, and also Mia St. John put out a challenge. Amateur Boxing: Sweden rules the roost in Oslo's ''Battle of Scandinavia"

(JAN 28) The ‘Battle of Scandinavia’ was fought this weekend, at least in the boxing ring, at the home of Oslo Bokseklubb in Jordalgata 12 in the Norwegian capital when male and female teams from Denmark, Finland and Sweden joined the host nation in the Four Nations Round Robin tournament.  This has always been a keenly contested tournament and this year proved no exception as fans enjoyed some great bouts before a highly appreciative audience....Full Story

(JAN 28) WBAN published the full fight video of the Yesica Bopp vs. Marisa Johanna Portillo fight that took place last night at the  Polideportivo Municipal, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bopp, 107, won by a decision over Portillo, 108, in a 10 rounder.  The two were fighting for the WBA and WBO light flyweight belts.

(JAN 25) Last night  at the Bricktown Event Center, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Jessica Rakoczy, 122, of Las Vegas, Nevada, won a 10-round unanimous decision over  Ada Velez, 122, of Miami, Florida. The two were fighting for the WIBA Junior Featherweight world title. All scores on cards were 99-90.

(JAN 23) Yesterday a press conference was held with the WBC, and there were two female boxers attending the event.  According to the WBC online website, Alejandra “Locomotora” Oliveras (28-2-2, 15 KO’s) from Santa Fe, Argentina visited the WBC offices to express her desire to fight for the WBC featherweight female title...Full Story

Mia St. John Steps up to challenge Cecilia Braekhus!

(JAN 23) This week on VG Nett [Boksing] there was a story with video on Mia "The Knockout" St. John, who talked about fighting Cecilia Braekhus. St. John said in the interview, "I want to go anywhere to fight Cecilia." St. John went on to say that she would be excited to fight Braekhus, that she is ready to do so, and that Cecilia should be afraid of a knockout. Video

(JAN 21)  In week three of our WBAN Weekly Review, we had a variety of action going on in the sport.  We did "latest updates" on two retired female boxers, Brenda Bell-Drexel and Deborah "Knockout" NicholsPepe Rodriguez sent in a story this week, on Mariana "Barbie" Juarez, that included some of her thoughts as to what 2013 will bring in her boxing career;  Michael O'Neill covered two amateur events with one taking place in France and the other in Serbia; We also did a review on "Episode 1" on "Boxer Chicks" with Terri Moss; we did a couple of pre-fight reports on two boxing events that include female boxing on the card.....and much, much more!...Full Story

Boxing: Sophie Revel is Boxer of the Tournament at 2013 French Amateur National Championships

(JAN 21) There was to be no fifth consecutive French Senior (69kg) title for Gihade Lagmiry when the 2013 French Amateur Senior Championships reached the finals stage at the Gymnase Lucan in Mantes-la-Jolie (Yvelines) on Saturday night.  The 25 years old, ninth year medical student representing U.S.Chambray was surprisingly defeated by Erika Guerrier in a low scoring bout, 9-7 with the fourth round proving all decisive.  New champion – and second seed - Guerrier admitted later that it was a difficult fight for her, adding: “ It is a victory with many emotions. Gihade is my friend. I made many sacrifices in 2012 in trying to qualify for the Olympic Games. Now I am looking forward to Rio 2016, and am more motivated than ever”...Full Story

(JAN 21)  On January 25, 2013, Gary Shaw Productions is scheduled to have his first of "more to come boxing events in 2013" at the Chumash Resort Casino in Santa Ynez, California. The upcoming event is entitled "Central Coast Championship Night".  There will be a female bout featured on the card.  Maria Suarez, 2-0-1 will fight Abigail Castaneda, 3-1-2, of Torrance, California. The two will be fighting either a four or six rounder in the super flyweight division. This will be a rematch for the two. Deborah Nichols:  Still going Strong 14 Years after Boxing!

(JAN 20) Maybe some of the newer boxers in the sport may not know Deborah "Knockout" Nichols, a 5'7", featherweight, from Dalton, Georgia----but I will tell you that when she boxed from 1997 - 1999, keeping a pristine professional boxing record of 8-0-2 (4KO), and earning two world title championships with the IFBA and IBA, she was a hot boxing star in the time she was fighting!  Full Story

(JAN 18)  WBAN just viewed the first episode of Boxer Chicks on Vimeo, produced by Tomorrow Pictures TV [tomorrowpictures.tv], that has produced a series on female boxing.  We thoroughly enjoyed the first episode and have embedded the video on WBAN.  In the first episode Terri Moss talks about the inherent social bias of being a female fighter. Brenda Bell-Drexel...You have come a LONG Way Baby after suffering a devastating injury!

(JAN 18) "Tiger Lady" Brenda Bell-Drexel has had a very long road in the world of female boxing----and now a long road in a recovery process after experiencing a devastating brain injury. Brenda began her professional boxing career in January of 1998, fighting the best of the best.  There is probably no one in this sport who could say that Brenda fought an easy bout in her 33 plus fights.   Her last fight took place in April of 2006---and then...WBAN did not hear much from Brenda Bell-Drexel.  Full Story

(JAN 16) The 2nd “Nations Cup” for Women , under the auspices of the EUBC, was held in Zrenjanin, Serbia between 8th and 13th January with a record entry of 167 boxers, 43 of whom were in the Senior elite division. Zrenjanin is located in the eastern part of Vojvodina, Serbia and has some 76,511 citizens within its city boundaries. Some fifteen countries provided the 167 contestants with the largest squads coming from Kazakhstan (31), Serbia (29) , Russia (22) ..Full Story

Boxing: European Amateur season gets under way with Golden Girl Box Cup in Borås.

(JAN 13) The European Women's Amateur circuit held one of its most popular early season tournaments this weekend in Borås , Sweden where some 114 boxers took part in this year’s Golden Girl BC Box Cup in the town’s Boråshallen. For those who do not know the region well, Borås is a locality and the seat of Borås Municipality, in Västra Götaland County boasting some 66,273 inhabitants in the 2010 census. The Golden Girl Tournament was first held there in 2009 when 70 of the best female boxers in Europe came to fight for the title "GOLDEN GIRL" – an award that went to England’s Hannah Beharry. By 2011 some 80 boxers took part in the tournament organised by the local club’s Ray Husac and Lina Erlandsson.  Full Story

New Boxer on Scene: Looking to Make her Pro Debut

(JAN 8) Susan Reno, born Susan Merlucci in Summit, New Jersey, grew up in the small town of Hackettstown, New Jersey. She dabbled in athletics like fencing and basketball but leaned more towards art, music and theater. At the age of 18, she moved to Brooklyn, New York, to study art at Pratt institute. USA Boxing to Host the Inaugural Junior World Team Open, January 7-11 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada

(JAN 3) USA Boxing will hold the first-ever Junior World Team Open, January 7-11 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nev. The event will showcase many of the nation’s top 15 and 16-year-old boxers as the male competitors vie for the opportunity to represent the United States at the 2013 AIBA Junior Men’s World Championships in August.  Tournament action is scheduled to begin with preliminary round action on Monday, January 7 with each session starting nightly at 6 p.m. at the Sierra State Pavilion at the Grand Sierra Resort. Quarterfinal competition will take place on Wednesday, January 9 and semifinal round action will be contested on Thursday, January 10. The finalists will compete in championship night action on Friday, January 11. ..Full Story
